After the Rugby World Cup test of systems in Christchurch the powers that be are hailing it as a success, but it appears to be a shambles & that is just based on what was on the media. Not to mention the scathing report from one Australian reporter & some letter writers to editors.
First response to the security set up was astonishment. The police system was been overseen from Wellington using technology. Well that is great, but it needs to be the people on the ground who make the decisions as if you are hit by a terrorist attack.
As I have said before you have about 30 seconds to react if it is a suicide bombing.
Technology is only ever an aid & after watching that any group planning an attack would be planning to disrupt those communications. I saw this done by a commander of mine when I first joined the army & were enemy for visiting US forces. They were so reliant on the communications that they had to send a vehicle down to ask us to stop as they could not function.
The police commander was heard to say that people are not arriving fast enough. Shows he does not know his community. Christchurch has this thing that everybody arrives up in last 30 minutes.
The Venue actually have said this morning that the crowds were arriving a little more even than normal. So there is a disconnection between the police commander in Wellington & the venue in between the understanding of local quirks.
Next we are hearing that the Rugby Road worked great. It is a terrorist attack waiting to happen on the way there & it is a riot waiting to happen on way back if the local team looses.
On the way to the stadium there are greater crowds & as suicide bombers work in groups all you need is a few spread out a long the route & mingle with the crowds. Or watch where the bottle necks are & place IED's. What was noticeable from footage was the lack of security along the route.
There have been a lot of comments in last few weeks about New Zealand fans been boorish. Actually they are becoming the worst sports fans you can have. The abuse of visiting fans or players & watch out if they loose, especially in Christchurch. Destruction of property & fighting is the norm.
Much has also been made about the number of staff at the stadium in the lead up to the game. From experience most of them would not be security so that makes the claims even more laughable. To comply with international standards there would have to be nearly 400 security staff as much for health & safety issues as anything.
That might seem overkill but should say a suicide bomber detonate a vest in the stadium there will be panic. Especially in NZ where such things are thought never likely to happen & then in that moment 400 will not be enough.
New Zealand needs to wake up & wake up quick. All the technology in the world is only ever an aid. Stop looking at this through rose coloured glasses. Saturday night was a shambles.

Fear rules the Security Industry!

Normally I don't like to publish anonymous comments especially if they are taking a swipe at you with out the facts to back them up, but the other day i received a comment in support of what I am saying on these blogs.
Why I published them was to show I am not the only one saying this within the industry.
Also the fact that someone in the NZ Security Industry will not put their name to supporting what I say, is many want to carryout real security, but are prevented by the companies. If their name was published they would be out of a job & more often than not on already low wages they have a family to support.
Although my company has not been succesful to this stage, what I do have is the freedom to comment on the industry as I & others see it.
There is no regard for staff health & safety for most, no regard to actual security. More often than not the NZ Security Industry has no idea what security is.
They bank on the fear of people wanting to keep their jobs for information not to leak out & the fact that in NZ a security guard is regarded at the very bottom of the food chain, despite many being extremely bright & commtitted to the profession.
Although that is mainly what I have seen in Christchurch, the observations made when travelling or talking to people from other areas show there is no difference in the rest of New Zealand.
That there is the same people showing up in control of the industry shows that there will be no change until something happens like a few deaths.
The Stampede in Germany, although NZ is not likely to have those numbers yet in one place, asks the question how would NZ security or crowd control handle a similar situation. From experience I would say not well at all.
Wikileaks has let the cat out of the bag on the US operations in Afghanistan & I am well aware of similar things happening in Iraq whilst working there, but it is no different to the NZ Security Industry on a much smaller scale. The secrets it knows not only of its clients but within the industry itself would shock most people.
The Industry counts again on that fear keeping people from commenting openly in a way that will bring change.

The differing views of Crowd Control!

Crowd Control is topical at present with the upset by NZ soccer (football) fans on how the South African security moved them on.
Again it comes back to the mindset of New Zealanders who think that we don't need too much security.
They forget that from overseas experience, crowd control is not just there for security, but Health & Safety as well.
They also don't realize that it is in their best interests if it is carried out in a certain way.
The clip here shows a demonstration outside a foregin embassy in Iraq & although the camera work is not great due to covert nature, it does show that how well crowd control can be achieved even by a force that doesn't appear well trained.
Having the security armed does help as less arguments, but it doesn't stop them using other skills to keep the crowds in check.
At one point the crowd started to get quite agitated once all groups marching were on site, so to keep them happy three of those in camouflage scaled the embassy & ripped down the foreign flag.
It worked because shortly after the crowd dispersed.
More often than most New Zealanders realize the requirements for a riot are in place. In fact I would say on several occassions each weekend in Christchurch alone.
But yet again the NZ mindset says common sense should prevail & we do not need too much security & no one should be allowed to interfere with our 'rights'.
More often than not the rights they talk about are the breaking of the law.
They can also not expect the low standards of crowd control to be practised when they attend overseas sporting events. It is NZ that has to come up to standard not the world come down to New Zealands level.
