Been a few days as having been involved in a few debates on Facebook & jumped a ride back out to help Bernie in his realiable jeep.
The debates have essentially been around what is a persons truth & what should be said at this time.
The first has been a debate over Ken Ring & his predictions of possible earthquakes based mainly on astrology. Having read quite a bit of his information & watched the pattern of shakes since there is definitely something in it. As he says himself it is not precise & if geologists would combine their knowledge of pressure build up with that astrologers it would help towards an accurate method of prediction.
But each to their own, just for me it feels right as based on thousands of years of observations therefore despite claims to the contrary the method is scientific because at its base level science is all about observations.
Then there has been TVNZ & their lack of real investigation before putting items on TV News.
First there was the person who claimed to have run out of the Christchurch Cathedral & the doors jamming behind them. He could of run out but there is evidence that the doors were never jammed.
When I posted what we got up to the day of the earthquake Neil Smith posted a comment with a link. I had trouble with the link & initially all I got was the filming in the open door of the Cathedral as the quake struck. It ended with the camera on the ground & dust everywhere. Having gone back to try to watch it in full for me anyway it now starts at the camera on the ground showing feet going past so that must of been people getting out.
But the extended footage at different times(its not continious) shows the door of the Cathedral remains open right until the police were telling people to move to Hagley park. In fact the first time I saw the doors shut was when I got home after helping the police on the cordon & turned on the TV.
So that casts questions over his account.
But then next night after ringing them to question his statement TVNZ have basically called me a liar by saying security cameras saw no one in the Cathedral. The cameras would of seen nothing as the dust was so thick inside & out that when we first went in stopped at the door as I said in original post & yelled for people to come to me as couldn't see in apart from hole in roof.
Other parts I didn't put in original post was I know for sure the Israeli woman came in with me & we got about ten people moving out. I was aware of a third person coming in a bit with us & now think that was the Israeli male who was a paramedic.
When the Cathedral staff member had re entered as the people we got moving left the Israeli woman said she thought there were people under some rubble by the tower as she could hear someone. Initially tried to pass the information at the police Kiosk then a quick look at injured(all had head injuries) seeing no police went to where I could see a jacket. Bumped into St John making way in & directed them to casualities(even then there were so many people just standing around in a daze & they were having to push through).
Found a police officer by the banks unfortunately with no radio as had been on another task. When we headed back found a police officer from Kiosk trying to help get woman down from window.
Myself & the Israeli paramedic tried to help with the woman stuck upstairs but the police didn't want help It was then I went looking for something else to do & noticed people posing by damaged parts of Cathedral for photos.
This all happened very quickly.
It was whilst posting myself near the entrance to keep people away that I saw the Israeli woman re enter the Cathedral several times including once with hard hat on & very angry. At the time we thought the cries she could hear were those of the the woman in upper window. The insurance person who came with ladder to rescue the woman in window later stepped into the open door of the Cathedral twice but maintained he could not hear anyone.
During that time keeping people away spoke to two staff members from the Cathedral. The one who has come in as we were clearing people out & another younger male who came out through doors later. It was him that pointed out that not only did people need to be kept away from Cathedral entrance but side was on a lean as well. More people posing for photos.
As you can see the initial post was long enough without adding in all those bits. Those that know me will tell you one of my traits is I don't lie but are brutually honest often to my own detriment so I don't take kindly to TVNZ basically calling me a liar as it did happen the way I describe.
Where we heros?
I don't think so just did what so many people did that day & had to do whilst so many others froze or went into denial.
The Israelis with what they have experienced in their country(same would be said of many including Palestinians) like myself with military training & time spent in Iraq just were able to mentally handle it better than most New Zealanders & react.
The other thing I noticed on finally returning home was footage of what appeared to be the Israeli paramedic been led away by police. With the Israeli background they just wanted to get in & help which saves lives. A war zone can be like an earthquake zone as you don't know when the next one is coming just like the big one that has just hit as I type. It was a very good wee shake. One of only three to knock things over in my place.
Another issue where the myth is seperated from the truth is the issue of portaloos here in Christchurch. Going out again with the intrepid Bernie we were joined by a friend of his with cameras. Alex was not happy with the response overall just like many haven't been & made the point that his area had had water back on within 12 hours but has a lot of portaloos in the area which really they don't need.
Having said this, when going to get some needed supplies we noticed a lot of portaloos in an area including businesses where water was known to be back on & flushing of toilets were allowed in a limited manner. The only people near one portaloo where those in a cemetry. We also noticed in parts that Portaloos were often on the sides of what apppeared to be empty business sections whilst the other side of the road with all the residential properties had nothing for Kilometres.
Where in the areas that due to their location you know are going to be without for months they were only just starting to get one or two dotted about. This is the sort of knowledge that should be allowing the city to cope better by re allocating resources as needed.
Chemical toilets are been handed out. I have one for security tasks & have had it about two years. But straight away people have noticed the ones coming in only have a small hole & any movements have to be poked down with a stick.
Then there is the Myth the Prime Minister is promoting. Can't see him staying too long in badly hit areas as when someone pointed out it was probably his Iroquois flying slowly overhead some made motions of shooting it down they were so upset with the poor response.
People don't think I should be hitting these areas that are not working on here but it is a way to get the frustration out. It is either that or get angry like many others are.
Whilst those that appear to be in charge are telling themselves myths, the truth is things are not as good as they are saying.
It doesn't help when the Minister in charge & the Mayor are contradicitng each other over the demolition of Historic buildings. Personally I think many of them should of been dozed after the first big shake but as the mayor found once the emergency regulations are removed there is a lot of feeling in retaining the old buildings.
One has been demolished, with comments from the Mayor it was illegal demolition. A relation trying to make their way home on the 22nd February said was leaning & a police officer was trying to keep people from going in the left turning lane as it looked like the building was going to collapse. I see the demolition company says it was told to do it by the council. So the left hand does not Knowing what the right hand is doing.
Then it is announced that there will be a plan to get people into their businesses or cars, first in 48 hours then in 24 hours & when nothing is forthcoming the site with information crahses from people trying to find out. When they announce that plan it is totally contradictory to that originally announced with green & red zones where you still can't get in whilst you know other businesses are getting their vehicles out of the same building.
People can say we need to look forward or things are not happening the way I & others are seeing it. With more quite good shakes like the one about 20 minutes ago we need to get our responses in order. We need to have this overall picture better sorted. Many of those trying to do a good job are not gaining the local information of where best to deploy the resources which is causing some who have come to help just going home.
I know on several occassions when Bernie has supplied some local information we have gained it has been a surprise. Others are just collecting goods donated but not getting out & finding out what is needed in their own community. Instead expecting people to come to them when they have no idea they have these resources.
Many times people are doing well but they are only seeing what is in front of them or not seeing the bigger picture.
Today is an example. It was mentioned on TV about a week ago that the river needed to be looked at. As of yesterday the lower Avon was still full of liquifaction & right now it is pissing down with rain(which probably caused the slipping of plates causing the most recent shocks) so with water still on roads in lower areas this rain & partially blocked rivers there is likely to be flooding to add to the worries. Most of the water we came across in the lower areas contained sewerage so potentially more health issues.
We are still doing things in the same narrow minded slow response developed by bureaucrats. For those of us who worked in Iraq in 2004-2006 you saw the US military working in this fashion in response to suicide bombers to start with & by the time I left their response had speed up so to keep things moving. Instead of lock down for sometimes days(the Iraqis noticed it too & remarked on it compared to the British reaction) it changed to secure that section & cleared within hours.
As I often say we are a fourth world country. Third world trying to pretend we are first world. The response to this is like a third world country at the decision making end.
A lot of the good work going on is been provided by individuals & businesses at no charge(not to mention the emergency services, military & rescue teams) but there are some sitting back to profit from it. All the good work though is not been complimented by good leadership despite what we see on TV. It was a complaint Alex made that nothing seems to get done until it is set up for soundbites.
To top it off some international media are reporting as an aside that the IMF(International Monetary Fund) is due in New Zealand next week to downgrade New Zealands Credit rating. If that happens any currency borrowed to fund the rebuild will be more expensive therefore it will flow onto those at the bottom in particular.
Actions & decisions have to be made quicker. That is the reality not the myth others are living with. Information needs to be gained at a local level not because it ticks some box.
The Christchurch 'Press' are now reporting the same reactions I have on this blog. It is all about getting to know the community.
It needs to be better or people are going to die from disease. Others from lessons we don't seem to be learning.

A Simple World made Complicated!
Kia Ora,
Was out all day yesterday assisting Bernie impliment the results of our night patrols & recce's for the Student Army.
Didn't quite spend as much time on the shovel as I expected I would as ended up assisting in coordinating efforts(which often meant standing on a corner redirecting people to where they were needed, ensuring those doing the digging were putting the sand where it could be cleared quickly & easily by machinery(which had not been communicated prior so there was some confusion) with a bit of hearts & minds.
There was the hope of the students thrown in with the Federated farmers practicality things progressed well. There were also people like the 15 year old who seemed old beyond his years just jumping in & helping. Another person who I often work security with like myself with no calls for work so jumping in & assisting where he could.
Interesting stories came out such as the claim that like the previous quake a tour bus had arrived in the area with cameras flashing until the locals turned it around.
Then there was the alleged incident that has allegedly seen an Australian Police officer sent home for beating a looter. There has been no confirmation but the source was pretty reliable & the reaction to the allegated incident shows the feeling around.
Personally I think if its true the officer should of got a medal & that is a view shared by many.
Today was time, with still no vehicle, to catch up share some stories with friends & family about their experiences of that day & since.
From two of them came a reaction when I said Civil Defence were useless.
One said they presented themselves as ex military with first aid training on the first day & was told "we can save everybody we don't need help" but their name was taken & they have not heard since.
The other said a family member of their's is so angry at the poor response of Civil Defence. This family member had been in Sri Lanka during the Indonesian Tsaunami but they had also been in London during the 2005 train bombings & they were not impressed with Civil Defence in New Zealand.
It is obvious that the rescue teams are of the highest level, the police & the services are putting in great efforts but yet again it is Civil Defence that is the very weak link.
One solution I have thought of is leave the permanent officials in place for civil defence & at the next emergency use the miltary to provide the headquarters at all levels.
Why try to remake a system that already works with professionals running it?
Something else that came up was the reaction of people on the day. Now the people I was mainly talking too were action people who had armed themselves with knowledge in particular following the September earthquake but they noticed that many froze or went into automatic/denial.
They say on any given day in a situation like presented here in Christchurch on Tuesday 22nd of February 2011 33% will freeze, 33% will go into denial or automatic mode & the final 33% will get stuck in or take control.
But in line with both what I saw on the day & my blogs in the past about New Zealand not been ready thinking "it will never happen here" others also noted that up to 90% seemed to freeze or go into denial mode.
The Civil Defence system seems to reflect this & the attitude experessed to one person indicated it hadn't changed from the time I was with it. Whilst the very top were good, underneath there was not enough reality or practical application.
Another issue raised by a former army mate on Facebook was how the different suburbs seemed to handle it but in the end it appears more complicated than that. Some suburbs had immediate response as those in places of influence were immediately aware of it due to their own situations. Information regarding other suburbs was not so forth coming.
It often has taken media attention to get facilities to an area. Everyone knows their are major issues in the central city but the information above that basic level is less well known to differing levels in different communities.
People generally believe that those in the poorer neighbourhoods don't try to look after themselves but that is not true. But there are enough ready to jump on the system to make that believable.
In Woolston I found out about just a group who is doing that. Partying everynight telling everyone about getting a $900 payout due the earthquake & Housing Corporation giving them three weeks rent free.
Whilst in Aranui people were not aware of the ability to get a payout & those we spoke too weren't going to take it until they had too anyway.
Then there was the brick house that looked in good shape except for one little detail. Housing Corporation had told the 83 year old living in the house it was Ok to stay in but the locals had pulled him out & would not allow him to go back.
The small detail was the way the house sloped forward into the front yard. It had a large(obviusly quite large though not as large as the Hotel Grand Chancellor)sink hole it was sliding into. Way to go the bureaucrats!
As the recovery swings into action it causes other issues. The faecal matter in the dust if not cleared quickly could cause diseases to break out but what we learned prior to setting out yesterday morning that had someone not stepped on some toes the Aranui area would not of been seen for another four days. It is likely that by that time the health issues would of multiplied. Measles are already in some areas along with diarrhoea.
There needs to be better use of volunteers in the early stages of a disaster like getting information out. Not the "we will save everyone you are not needed" syndrome. The obvious major issue was the CBD on the first day, but after the initial response where people could of been used better & bugger the danger, immediately after they need to use those resources.
I say bugger the danger because we have become too risk adverse. Rushing into to save others is what some do. It is where some shine that struggle in the everyday world. Making a difference is what some people do & it shows the real meaning of service.
The only reason cash comes into it is to survive in the world we live in. It is the oil that allows us to deliver or not deliver the services.
In saying bugger the danger there is another side to that.
There is to be an investigation into why two more modern properties collapsed. It is a point I have raised before. Stuctural engineers said along with the Mayor that the building code is only there to save lives not the buildings. That means that no property should of had just a visual check but a proper check using all the resources available or they should of been replaced. Just like a bicycle helmet after it has been used.
Some honesty would be nice right now!

How long & far will the Dominoes fall?
Kia Ora,
Many of the financial commentators I follow are of the opinion that the US is likely to have either a revolution or civil war based on the fact that the actions been taken by the Federal Reserve have now made conditions worse than the French Revolution. All it needs is a few tweaks & it will all come tumbling down. Tweaks like inflation causing the amount spent weekly on food from the take home pay to rise.
That has been seen as the real trigger behind the continuing unrest in the Middle East.
Meanwhile here in New Zealand the belief it will never happen here. But then that is the claim for just about everything here.
One person said to me that New Zealand would never have a revolution as it is all too PC so no one would want to offend anyone.
Though I think it is more complex than that & the PC New Zealand is actually breeding conditions right for it to happen.
We have had in the past what amounted attempts to change governments. The 1913 waterfront strike been the first broken up by what became known as Massey's Cossacks as Terroritorial mounted units rode to town to break it up. Both sides were a year later fighting for King & country in Egypt & a year later Gallipoli.
Then in 1951 again it was the water front strike where the Unions took on the government who sent in the police & army.

The difference these days is the power of social media to quickly organize then mobilize people. In particular young people(its the young that have been at the heart of all recent issues around the world) who because of our PC society think they have all the rights. Right there is one requirement for a riot from the start. A shared common belief.
For years now our youth like those across the world have been using different forms of social media to organize. Not long after returning from security work in Iraq I was called to help at a birthday party. The expected 70 people went to 300 in about five minutes by use of text(SMS) messages. Good use of a note book & knowledge of the law soon had that back to the expected 70.
A week later two young girls died when a party got out of control & police were confronted by up to 1000 people also organized by text message.

More recently facebook has been used to organize parties on beaches in Auckland then even more recently a party in Greymouth where police were attacked.
It is no mistake that governments in the middle east shut down social media but by then it was too late.
As they used to say a person would tell six people if they were upset who would tell six people. With emails it was said this changed to 200 people told. With social media you tell the world & once it is out there right or wrong there is no stopping it.

For those a bit older like myself it has been hard to understand first the appeal then how it could affect what we do or our society. We did know that society was changing especially in the likes of security because we were confronting it often & still are.
It was one of those 'aha' moments to realize how immensely powerful these new tools were. Governments still do not realize just how powerful. By their nature bureaucarcies move slowly even when efficient which they generally are not. They can not combat the speed at which social media works.
Using New Zealand as an example of what may happen there needs to be a focal point. Now similar to what happened in Italy at one part where one march was joined by several groups with different gripes with the government resulting in unrest could happen here.

For example shortly there is likely to be a Hikoi(march on a point of disagreement by mainly the Maori community) heading to Wellington(our capital city) now other groups could join in at Wellington such as Unions, citizens of Canterbury upset about the poor government response to the earthquake(as happened in Italy) so you suddenly have a lot of upset people in one place.
It would be easier with social media to suddenly add to that a large group of youths who have been watching youtube & think it would be great to emulate others around the world.
People say others would not take part but once something like a riot starts or builds people get caught up in the feeling. From there seeing what has happened around the world it is only a short step to the next level then another dominoe falls.

What has started in the Middle East could easily continue around the whole world & with social media involvment no country is safe from its effects. It really is that powerful when combined with other ingredients & like a row of dominoes.
There is word now that Algeria has stockpiled food to give out to its people to help settle tensions. China has not just stockplied commodities to keep its industry going through the hard times but guaranteed access to some food, though they have banned the people from hoarding food.
It will be interesting to see if this time tested form of appeasing people can stop the dominoes or even outpace social media?

For example shortly there is likely to be a Hikoi(march on a point of disagreement by mainly the Maori community) heading to Wellington(our capital city) now other groups could join in at Wellington such as Unions, citizens of Canterbury upset about the poor government response to the earthquake(as happened in Italy) so you suddenly have a lot of upset people in one place.
It would be easier with social media to suddenly add to that a large group of youths who have been watching youtube & think it would be great to emulate others around the world.
People say others would not take part but once something like a riot starts or builds people get caught up in the feeling. From there seeing what has happened around the world it is only a short step to the next level then another dominoe falls.

What has started in the Middle East could easily continue around the whole world & with social media involvment no country is safe from its effects. It really is that powerful when combined with other ingredients & like a row of dominoes.
There is word now that Algeria has stockpiled food to give out to its people to help settle tensions. China has not just stockplied commodities to keep its industry going through the hard times but guaranteed access to some food, though they have banned the people from hoarding food.
It will be interesting to see if this time tested form of appeasing people can stop the dominoes or even outpace social media?

Information Security a major Issue!
Kia Ora,
There has been a lot of concern about information security in particular on the likes of Facebook then the concerns everytime Facebook renews its format.
But it again is the information security of a local business that is the issue. In fact it is the same business as last post on the subject NZ Post.
I received a letter from a manager at NZ Post, I was going to insert their name here but decided not too, who from the tone of the letter is the person I spoke too when the issue first came to light.
They claim the evidence they provide shows that they have all my information & have never lost anything. In fact it does the opposite it shows I am 100% correct & they have lost all the information I have given NZ post over the previous four years.
It appears they have not thought it through which brings to mind this quote;
"Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is probably why so few engage in it." Henry Ford.
Seems this person has selective memory saying I from the start made false accusations. Actually no it was the other way around. Spoke very nicely to a nice girl that I had concerns about information held on me had gone missing. She put me through to this manager.
He answered saying there was a problem with my phone & obviously didn't like it when I pointed out that the issue was obviously his end. He then says he will pull over. Case closed on that issue.
I then very calmly expressed I had extreme concerns over information held about me which appeared to have gone missing. His reply "We don't lose information" I replied "you do & you have" from there it deteriorated until I swore at him then had to hang up as he continued to rant.

Now two other issues came up here & the first I dealt with in the last post & will deal more in depth at the end of this post, that of swearing as a good stress relief. Seems it is Ok to these days abuse a police officer but not some incompetent, lazy, corrupt bureaucrat.
The other issue which this individual shows they are very poor at is customer service.
For an investigation for one they never even involved me & then it appears the person I disagreed with, investigated themselves. So they only ever had half the story & were sadly missing some facts. That is corruption!
The attitude is something that has come up several times in business group discussions & how bad customer service is in New Zealand. It results in either arguments or more often than not in New Zealand people walking away, but telling everyone or whinging about how bad the service is.
They don't do like foreigners or myself that actually tell people how bad the service is. It actually lessens the stress by getting it out there.

It is something New Zealand has not as yet got to grips with, but overseas social media can destroy a business or a country(It is why Egypt has closed down social media then the internet). The customer is not always right but they do have the right to put their case, not have a white wash of an investigation. In fact that is the normal way of doing an investigation in government entities now. Only investigate their side then proclaim there is not an issue.
People complain about the police investigating themselves. At least knowing police they will generally take all details they can into account. Others only look at themselves & present the information they think is right not the facts.
So what has happened to this information I have given NZ Post. Seems it has just gone into the system to be lost forever. Despite the fact I have now sent a letter higher up the chain with the corruption now in the system I don't expect a result or even an apology.

What do they want people venting steam by swearing or rioters with iron bars or firearms? Because that is where it will go if people keep not performing, the financial crisis gets worse & people are forced to surpress their feelings.
The Chinese know that you can be pretty hard on your people & they will take it but when you start adding in the rising costs of living in particular food it is a recipe for disaster.

What lessons can we learn from already in the wake of the Earthquake?

Been an interesting time since yesterday morning. There have been a lot of people slapping themselves on the back & some certainly deserve it whom I will get to later, but others are just fooling themselves.
First issue is the information.
Like many countries we have the yellow pages which has emergency instructions in the rear.
Major issues with the Civil Defence information there.

First issue was it has nominated radio stations to listen too. It used to be radio & TV but there are so many radio stations now they seem to settled on a few.
Great but what I noticed is most people went to watch on TV if power on. Society has changed. The other thing was I have my radio on one of those radio stations, but when I turned it on all I got was canned music. In fact that is all I got until I faintly got Radio Live(my sister was listening to them as well for information) which was reporting the earthquake, then found better reception & good reporting coming from Radio New Zealand.
It was just lack of information in the initial period even of a general nature that was probably worst thing for those in the quake zone. It was up to two & a half hours before you really got any good information & after 8am before TV came to the party.
First information I really got was from geonet.co.nz but then I was lucky & had power & internet. Much of the city didn't.

Then in the yellow pages it now says drop, cover & hold for an earthquake. Never heard of that drill & for a variety of reasons haven't had yellow pages for several years now, but just received the new one the other day.
From comments though not many if any people, except maybe kids as it is similar to fire drill, are aware of this drill. Many did as I did & went for doorways or under tables & others in particular near the epicentre exited the buildings as they collapsed or felt they were going to collapse(but then didn't they all?). The one thing that all drills say is don't exit during quake. Good on paper, but when you are in one like that, not so straight forward.
It is all well from learning others experience & coming up with new drills, but if no one knows what they mean(it tells you a drill but not the meaning of the words (bloody hold on to what?) they will do as always taught. Poor communication.

But then communication is one of the things that has been done badly.
For example there has been confusing information over water & sewage in particular the flushing of toilets.
In our area there was one burst water pipe or main that was quickly sorted & for a while there was some issues with pressure but then it was good. So talking to people they thought it was still good to drink & flush their toilet. The information didn't help as it ranged from minimise use of water including flushing to don't flush at all.
It wasn't until 6pm on the news the Mayor of Christchurch clairfied that water even if clear needed to be boiled until the all clear given & no flushing as pumping stations were down as they conducted checks to ensure systems are OK.

The other big communication issue has been over the aftershock. I have just heard on the radio two people in positions of responsibility down play the word going around that there would be a big after shock in the region of 6 on the richter scale(think it just hit as I wrote that, one nice big jolt).
Obviously they don't listen to the experts who are advising them as that information came from them those experts based on history of earthquakes.
There had been over 50 greater than four on the richter scale by 11.30am since the quake not including one about a minute ago.

Another is this morning by media watch which first criticized the media for the slow response by media initially as referred to above, but also for the media hyping it up as they do. In fact from photos I have seen on facebook from friends if anything the media under sold it initially.
One issue the media were taken to task over was that of the looting. The Police say this was few incidents but quickly dealt with. But looting was always a strong possiblity & that is born out by the NZ Security Industry at full stretch & many been quickly deployed shortly after the quake in Christchurch even with fact that sales staff from companies on the ground acting as guards as well as those with injuries(from prior to the quake) like myself getting calls(frustrating as you want to help, but now will be doing so after first being not wanted).

The looting issue rasies another lesson.
The Mayor of Christchurch asked for help in particular from the army camp(situated nearly on the epicentre) through the government. Been an ex soldier mainly based in a unit in that camp I know that as soon as the initial quake had settled, checks had been carried out the personnel would of been chomping at the bit to do their bit. Too many times have we sat in barracks on standby whilst either the government or more particularly the NZ police/Civil Defence hierachy(not the people(especially police) on the ground as they would appreciate the help) in these sort of situations have decided they want to retain control.
Get the army in as soon as possible. The way they train the infantry units are ready to go within half an hour or less. The training includes Aid to the Civil power where the police can give powers of arrest down to NCO level, but it is all under police control. So you can have two scenarios where either one police officer per platoon (approx 30 soldiers located with HQ) to back up troops on ground or if they are concerned a police officer per section. Cuts the requirement for police manpower. We did it in the 1984 Invercargill floods, but hardly ever since.
Announcing you are pulling a large police contingent from New Zealand's major city to help has just told criminals there it is time to play.
It just needs the police, politicians or Civil Defence to realize what the military bring to these situations.

Only in hindsight they weren't working they were disconnecitng, following protocols & shutting down the whole South Island rail network.
To top that last night a large train (the first to come through since the quake) with what appeard to be passenger coaches in it. What we now know is it was train put together by Fonterra with their special milk carriages & Kiwi Rail to get water up to Christchurch.

The Airforce for getting Police & Politicians in to assist & assess. Also for that comforting sound of an Iroquoi this morning which it transpires was taking the Mayor over the city for an overview of the damage.

Because New Zealand is cut in half by two continental plates it is prone to earthquakes & to a lesser extent volcanic eruptions & why Australians refer to us as the Shaky Isles. Though Canterbury would be the least likely place most people in NZ would think of for an event like this. So the building codes have over the years been improved & worked on to look at surviveability in large quakes. This quake was similar to Hati's but low population, fact epicentre is in rural areas & good building codes has lessened impact.

There will be others but one that really stood out is store owner Mr Patel.
On been woken by the quake he went & opened his dairy so people could get water, batteries & other goods(true bit late after the fact for people to do this but it was common) but he gave his water & milk away & only accepted payment for batteries apparently after people insisted but would only accept it would seem at cost price.
Instead of patting themselves on back though there are some who need to look at lessons, not say we did OK no need to change.
The others in particular Mr Patel & those companies that could without waiting to be asked show what people can really do.

Facebook promotes more crime in New Zealand!

It seems that clocking up numbers is more important to Facebook than actually checking on sites as they are set up.
The latest is here in Christchurch a group was formed on Facebook(now been removed) promoting murder. It was under the name 'Christchurch Police Narks Snitchs as outlined in the article in 'The Press'.
One post allegedly named someone it claimed was a Nark with the comment "kill this bitch." Another allegedly contained "kill the narks," within its thread.
Facebook is a great way to keep in touch, but it really has to look at having local staff who vet the pages been created.
With these pages promoting crime seeming to been created at will & only coming to attention of the wider public as they grow, I don't see it too long before Facebook is sued or convicted.

Too little, too late! The seed has been sown!

After yesterday's blog I went back to look at the Facebook page in regards to riots in New Zealand. It appears to have been removed.
But it is too little too late!
The seed has already been sown for problems down the road.

21,000 might not seem a lot of people but if all of those are in NZ or plan to be during the Rugby World Cup then out of a population of four million people that is a significant amount. Enough to get the ball rolling on mayhem & destruction.
I know that probably 99.9% of the NZ Security Industry at present are not trained in riot control or ways to stop it before it gets out of control.

After yesterday's blog I went back to look at the Facebook page in regards to riots in New Zealand. It appears to have been removed.
But it is too little too late!
The seed has already been sown for problems down the road.

By allowing a page to be formed calling for riots is the All Blacks loose in the Rugby World Cup 2011 here in NZ.
What those that set up the page do not realize is they most likely can be prosecuted for incitement to riot.
Tonight the police here in Christchurch will not have a great night as the local Rugby team lost. It would be a lot worse if they, the Crusaders(professional team) or All Blacks lost in the city itself.
Yes a lot of people on that page will be on there just for fun, but there is a growing number that will be on there to happily take part in any anti social activities that would break out if this situation arises.
The NZ police have said that they are ready for any eventuality & are preparing for issues at the Stadia.

But what if the issues arise away from the Stadia? Most New Zealanders are not going to be able to attend the main games live as they have already been seen to be far too expensive for most.
It is doubtful that the police or NZ Security Industry will be ready for too many incidents at once of this type.
So gatherings in town centres or hospitality spots such as Party Central will be where it starts as people get angry over the loss & it would spread quickly. If people already have a common belief, as promoted by the Facebook page, then it wouldn't take much to spark riots.
One of the six requirements for a riot to occur is a common belief.
Social Media can be useful, but it also can spread quickly messages that can have far retching consequences such as text messages to out of control parties that the police regularly have to deal with.
